Wi-Fi 6 is better and faster. Here is what you need to know.

Wi-Fi 6 is making headlines this year but it is a little more complicated than that. Yes things are going to be faster than before and range is going to be better, but it will also change connection speeds between devices in the home or at the office.

If you are looking to understand a bit more about how this is going to work, you came to the right place.

Let’s start with the basics.

What is Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6, or 802.11ax is the newest version of a standard wireless network that transmits data to people commonly over Wi-Fi. It is essentially the same as the Wi-Fi you have today and if you are a standard user you are unlikely to notice a difference however for the avid day to day Wi-Fi user or tech-head the new technology will be very apparent. This is a result of the increase connection speed between devices.

Wi-Fi 6? Did I miss the other 5?

No, the names are just there to decipher between versions. This is to help people who do not work with wireless networks for a living understand the difference between the older version and the newer version of Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi Alliance is a non-profit industry group that helps maintain and certify Wi-Fi devices, it is now transitioning to a simpler more user-friendly way about talking about the standard. The new version is the 6th version thus they’re calling it Wi-Fi 6.

When will Wi-Fi 6 Get here?

The technology is already here but it will take a while before Wi-Fi 6 out and available in your nearest Tech store. Brands like Cisco, Netgear, Asus, Ubiquiti and TP-Link are already rolling out, including new mesh options for the Netgear Orbi, Arris SURFboard and TP-Link Deco lineups. Also, phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10 were the 1st to support Wi-Fi 6 as well as the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max.

You will, of course, need a Wi-Fi 6 router to receive the benefits of the Wi-Fi 6 upgrade. Also, non-Wi-Fi 6 devices will experience a data transfer increase as the improved Wi-Fi 6 network also has an upgraded effect on older devices.

Just how fast is Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6 has proven to be about 40% faster than Wi-Fi 5. With speeds of around 1320 MB per second.

They have been tests on several Wi-Fi 6 Routers with some of them having the ability to transfer up to 1523 MB per second over a distance of 5 feet. That is about 60% faster than the previous version of Wi-Fi. This means that Wi-Fi 6 is faster than what we’ve seen before.
